Headline: Congress Backs Pawan Khera as Legal Battle Intensifies After Repeated Bail Setbacks in Alleged Defamation Case
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera faces repeated legal setbacks as his anticipatory bail pleas are rejected by multiple courts in a defamation and conspiracy case filed by Rinki Bhuiya Sarma. The Congress party announces plans to approach the Supreme Court, escalating a politically sensitive legal battle attracting nationwide attention.
Congress General Secretary and Rajya Sabha Member Jairam Ramesh stated on social media on Saturday that the party stands resolutely with Pawan Khera following the rejection of his anticipatory bail plea by the Gauhati High Court on Friday. He emphasized that the party is preparing to move the Supreme Court to ensure justice for the Congress spokesperson.
Ramesh further asserted that the party remains confident that justice will prevail despite what he described as a pattern of intimidation and harassment politics. He expressed belief that the legal system would ultimately uphold fairness in the matter.
The case against Pawan Khera was filed at the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station by Rinki Bhuiya Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The complaint includes charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy.
The allegations stem from statements made by Pawan Khera on April 9, shortly before polling, in which he reportedly claimed that Rinki Bhuiya Sarma possessed three foreign passports. Rinki Bhuiya Sarma has strongly denied these allegations, calling them completely false.
Since the filing of the case, Assam Police have been actively searching for the Congress leader, who has not yet appeared before investigating authorities.
In an earlier stage of the legal proceedings, Pawan Khera approached the Telangana High Court seeking relief. The court granted him transit anticipatory bail for one week, on the condition that he would subsequently approach the Gauhati High Court. However, the Assam government challenged this order in the Supreme Court of India, which stayed the transit anticipatory bail and directed Khera to approach the Gauhati High Court.
Following the Supreme Court’s directive, Khera moved the Gauhati High Court, but his plea was rejected, marking another significant setback in his legal battle. With both the Supreme Court and Gauhati High Court denying relief at different stages, the Congress leader now faces intensified legal pressure as investigations continue.
The unfolding case has escalated into a major political and legal flashpoint, drawing national attention as the Congress Party intensifies its legal and political response in support of its spokesperson.
The situation underscores the growing tensions between political narratives and legal proceedings, with further developments expected as the matter moves toward the Supreme Court.
